What You Need to Know About Bamboo Flooring

There are a lot of myths floating around about bamboo floors. If you haven’t done your research on this particular flooring material, you might be led astray by some of them yourself. We want to shed some light on a few of these myths, so that you will be a little better informed in your search for the perfect flooring material.

Bamboo Flooring is Soft
This myth originated when bamboo first came on the scene back in the 90’s. It was, at that time, easier to scratch and dent and got a bad reputation for it. However, manufacturing techniques have greatly changed things since then. In fact, in 2007, Strandwoven bamboo made its debut. It is three times more durable than other bamboos, and is quickly becoming one of the most popular.

Bamboo Flooring is Unstable
This myth comes from the fact that any hardwood will expand and contract with temperature or humidity changes. This happens, as it does with all hardwoods, because it is a natural product. However, it’s no worse than any other wood, and can even be acclimated to your particular climate. Before you rule out bamboo for this reason, talk to a flooring professional about the specifics.

Bamboo Flooring Can’t Be Installed Over Concrete
This myth exists mainly because in many circumstances, mold and mildew can grow underneath the flooring. However, with a proper concrete vapor barrier applied first, this can be prevented, as can other issues related to moisture.

Bamboo Floors Can’t Be Refinished
The fact is, if using a professional refinishing service, bamboo can be refinished several times, just like other hardwood floors can. However, so long as the bamboo is kept clean and debris-free, it will last for decades or longer before you will ever needing to address refinishing.
