Whether you live in a dry sunny climate, or a humid or rainy climate, strand woven bamboo flooring has the chops needed to stand the test of time. Since strand woven bamboo flooring is twice as hard as traditional oak flooring, you would have to have some pretty wild pets or children to really have too great a negative impact on this amazing material.
First, uniformly cut bamboo stalks are cut into strips and then woven together. Next, an environmentally friendly adhesive is applied and the woven strips are pressed into a thick block using high pressure and heat. Then, the blocks are cut into the familiar floor planks you see available for sale.
This process creates an extremely durable product that is resistant to many of the common factors that damage floors.
What is the Environmental Impact?
Strand woven bamboo flooring is easily one of the most environmentally friendly floor covering options available on the market today.
Nearly all of the bamboo stalk is used in the production, leaving little wasted raw material.
Probably the greatest quality of strandwoven bamboo flooring, from an environmental perspective, is that bamboo is a very fast-growing, easily renewable resource. Even better, while the bamboo is growing, it absorbs CO2 and after it has been cut, it stores that CO2 over the life of the floor.
Is it Easy to Maintain?
Strandwoven bamboo flooring is incredibly easy to maintain. It pretty much has the same requirements as a hardwood floor and carries all of the benefits of hardwood floors as well. Basically, all you have to do is regularly sweep the floor to avoid any abrasion from built up grit and dirt, and be sure to avoid allowing water to sit on the surface for too long.
Obviously, you also should avoid anything that would cause gouges or scrapes as well, but the same can be said for any hardwood floor. Just be sure to move your furniture carefully, and avoid dropping anything too heavy and pointed on the floor.
When it’s all said and done, strand woven bamboo flooring is a great alternative to traditional hardwood flooring for people who value environmental responsibility, superior durability, ease of maintenance, and a unique aesthetic. If you are considering installing new floors, do yourself a favor and take a look at a few samples and see what you think. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by what you find!
